| News 28-Jun-2009 - STARTS WEDNESDAY JULY 8th-BRUNO |
Borat trickster Sacha Baron Cohen returns to the big screen to offer yet another stinging dose of sociopolitical satire in this comedy that finds him assuming the persona of gay fashionmonger Bruno, the self-proclaimed "voice of Austrian youth TV." | News 26-Jun-2009 - BALLET COMES TO DEVONPORT |
After the incredible success of The Met Opera (don’t worry, it comes back to us in October), it is with great excitement to say that we have booked our first Two Ballets. The Pharaoh’s Daughter – August 8th 11.00am and 9th at 1.00pm (BOLSHOI)The Pharaohs Daughter was created by Marius Petipa in 1862 for the Bolshoi Theatre in St. Petersburg. The ballet was immensely popular with the public and adored by the ballerinas. After the composer, Pugni, in a fit of anger, destroyed the piano score, Petipa began to stage the ballet without music; the music was added later. Petipa, who addressed the members of the corps-de-ballet as “ma belle”, was convinced that music existed just for dancing and dancing, for ballerinas. Pierre Lacotte, in his restoration for the Bolshoi Theatre Company in Moscow, recreated all the dances, giving highly complex variations and adagios to both ballerinas and male dancers.Petipa’s choreography was reconstructed by Pierre Lacotte for a lavish production into which the Bolshoi threw all its resources; lavish ancient Egyptian scenery and costumes, brilliant performances by the corps de ballet and the orchestra, and above all spectacular performances by the leading dancers Svetlana Zakharova and Servei Filin. (Washington Post) SWAN LAKE Sat 29th August at 11.00 am and Sunday the 30th at 1.00pm “The Kirov’s production is breathtakingly gorgeous.” – The Boston Globe“Thirty-two swans moving as one.” – LA Times“Ulyana Lopatkina is the company’s supreme swan queen.” – The ObserverTickets for these ballets are $20.00 for Adults and $18.00 for concessions.
